December 14, 2011 As humans, we are naturally drawn to learning about the things we can see - the computers on our desks and the telephones that we use every day for example. But a growing contingency in the science community is interested in something even smaller. What holds together the particles that make up that computer? What causes the wires inside the telephone to send a signal? These questions are part of the nanoscience and nanotechnology fields, and educators at the MathScience Innovation Center have spent years travelling far and wide to learn about these ideas and to develop curriculum based on the knowledge that is being discovered. December 13, 2011 - The Fall 2011 Let's Innovate conference for middle school students drew over 150 students to the MathScience Innovation Center where they learned how to create augmented reality games for smartphones. read more here (external link)


December 8, 2011 - Science teachers Aron Fristoe and Wayne Gilcrest get a leg up in planning their Governor's School class A River Runs Through It with a grant from the Virginia Department of Environmental Science. read more here (external link)

December 1, 2011 - Meet the newest member of the MathScience Innovation Center team: Georgia Terwilliger.

Terwilliger will be filling in on our K-5 science team teaching such lessons as Skeletons and Defense, the Shape of Things, and Give Me a Clue. She is a substitute teacher with Hanover County Public Schools and enjoys dancing.

November 5, 2011 - Spooktacular rocked this year! This 3rd Grade lesson, taught virtually from our broadcast booth here at the MathScience Innovation Center, connects multiple classrooms across Central Virginia for a one-hour lesson about things that creep, crawl and bump in the night.read more here (external link)


October 15, 2011 - 153 Students Attended The First of Three Let's Innovate Conferences For Middle School Students. October 11, 2011 - Metro Richmond Science Fair Grand Prize Winner Samantha Marquez chosen to receive the Thomas Edison Innovation Award and will be inducted in the National Gallery of Young Inventor's Hall of Fame.read more here (external link)


October 3, 2011 - Today is the first day school divisions sent students to lessons on this campus for 2011-2012. Hanover's Chickahominy Middle and Liberty Middle were in the Challenger Center; Powhatan's Flat Rock Elementary was in the Dominion Weather Center and World of Spiders; Hanover's Cold Harbor Elementary was in the Eco-Detectives Center; Hanover's Battlefield Park Elementary and South Anna Elementary was in Fractal Keys, LEGO Energy and Pico Park; Richmond's George Mason Elementary was in Mystery Cargo and Skeletons and Defense.

This week 178 classes were scheduled to be taught by MathScience Innovation Center faculty. What a way to start off the month!
